چکیده

In the Fraser phase-illusion [Popple & Sagi. Vision Research, 40 (2000) 873-878] rows of Gabor patches appear tilted because successive elements are shifted in phase. We measured this bias in global orientation judgment, while varying the number of patches in each row, and their separation. We found that illusory tilt increases with the number of patches, at least up to ten patches for a separation of four carrier periods. This finding implies that the visual system is able to integrate information over large (>10 degrees ) strips of the central visual field. Our model shows that the tilt illusion might be the result of averaging the activity of oriented filters.

Combining cues in contour orientation discrimination

The perceived orientation of a Gabor-patch contour is determined, in part, by shifts in carrier phase between the patches [Popple, A. V. & Sagi, D., 2000. A Fraser illusion without local cues? Early and late beta-band power reflect audiovisual perception in the McGurk illusion.

The McGurk illusion is a prominent example of audiovisual speech perception and the influence that visual stimuli can have on auditory perception. In this illusion, a visual speech stimulus influences the perception of an incongruent auditory stimulus, resulting in a fused novel percept. In this high-density electroencephalography (EEG) study, we were interested in the neural signatures of the ...

The Hermann-Hering grid illusion demonstrates disruption of lateral inhibition processing in diabetes mellitus.

BACKGROUND/AIM The Hermann-Hering grid illusion consists of dark illusory spots perceived at the intersections of horizontal and vertical white bars viewed against a dark background. The dark spots originate from lateral inhibition processing. This illusion was used to investigate the hypothesis that lateral inhibition may be disrupted in diabetes mellitus. METHOD A computer monitor based psy...

Challenging the distribution shift: Statically-induced direction illusion implicates differential processing of object-relative and non-object-relative motion

The direction illusion is the phenomenal exaggeration of the angle between the drift directions, typically, of two superimposed sets of random dots. The direction illusion is commonly attributed to mutual inhibition between direction-selective cell populations (distribution-shift model). A second explanation attributes the direction illusion to the differential processing of relative and non-re...
